Name of Assignment: Occupation assignment
Subject: AJ 101
Facilitator/Teacher: Ryan Daniels
Description of Work/Assignment: The occupation assignment required us to find an entry-level job related to Administrative Justice, with the exception of law enforcement, and write a 2-3 page paper based on our research. I chose a Foreign Service Officer in the Public Diplomacy route (when an FSO first applies, they choose to go onto an Economic, Public Diplomacy, Consular, Management, or Political track).
Which 21st Century Skills do you feel this assignment addresses, and why?
I feel that this assignment addresses my information, civic literacy/engagement, self-directional, and global awareness skills (looking at global workplaces beyond my neighborhood). Information skills were used by collecting large amounts of research for the project, Civic Literacy was used when I was looking into the U.S. government, and global awareness skills when I was researching foreign governments. Self-directional skills were used by demonstrating overall career readiness.
What are you most proud of from this assignment, and why?
I am most proud of finding the salaries of an entry-level FSO. It was difficult because they were coded on the website, and I had to go to a different page and download the key before I could match them up. It took a while to figure out, but it was great to finally connect the two. Picture attached.
How did you develop and/or improve upon your 21st Century Skill with this assignment?
My information skills improved the most on this assignment, just from the sheer amount of research I did. My self-directional skills also improved, because I have never gotten a career-driven assignment that was so in-depth.
What was most difficult about completing this task?
The most difficult part about this project was realizing how hard it was to become a diplomat. The test necessary to pass takes 3 days, intending to test the strength of the person applying to make sure they can stay calm in extreme situations of stress or even danger. Once you become a diplomat, you aren’t guaranteed quality medication or living conditions. Finding out just how challenging diplomacy can be was a shock.
How could you improve this work? If you could start over, what would you do differently?
If I could have improved my work, I would have used the UHMC online library for statistics and higher-quality resources. I forgot that it was a resource and used google for most of my sources, so I ended up with a couple of .com sites even though I was trying to avoid them.
How does this relate to what you have learned in the past?
The most relatable assignment to this one was the “career readiness” unit we had in Junior Seminar last year. We looked into what we planned on doing after high school and college but focused more on finances than the actual job we chose.
How can you apply this to future learning?
One aspect of this assignment that applies to future knowledge is understanding how to use .gov sites. .gov sites tend to have so much information that it is difficult to find the answers to specific questions in a time-manageable way. Now I have an idea of where to go for some information, and what to look for that leads me to my answers.
