Name of Assignment: Caribou Crossing Response Essay
Subject: Anthropology
Facilitator/Teacher: Professor Melissa Kirkendall
Description of Work/Assignment: Watch the film "At the Caribou Crossing Place" and write a 5 paragraph essay relating the film to human ecology (how man reacts with nature).
Which 21st Century Skill do you feel this assignment addresses, and why?
The main 21st-century skill that I used for this project is global awareness because I was striving to understand the culture's lifestyle and interaction with their environment. Interpersonal skills were used as well, because I worked with the advice and thoughts given to me by people that responded to my essay to improve it.
What are you most proud of from this assignment, and why?
I am proud of the outline for my essay. The instructions were a little vague and I was afraid of wandering off the topic, so I confirmed my outline with the professor before continuing.
How did you develop and/or improve upon your 21st Century Skill with this assignment?
I improved my self-directional skills by creating a schedule to complete different areas of the assignment. Each day I followed the list I had written for myself and turned it in with time to spare.
What was most difficult about completing this task?
The most difficult part of completing the task was connecting all of my thoughts. In my essays, sometimes I have trouble when leading from one subject to another, and I will have to go back and heavily revise my paragraphs. I also had trouble tying my essay to my conclusion at the end.
How could you improve this work? If you could start over, what would you do differently?
My next response essay will already be better than this one just because of the experience I now have. I have never written a response essay and was unfamiliar with the format we were using. Even so, I could have improved this essay by bringing up my questions with the professor or doing more research on response essays.
How does this relate to what you have learned in the past?
In sociology last year, our class studied the social structures of Native cultures, which I found to be the most interesting part of the class. The assignment interested me because I was learning something I had already seen, but studying it in a different light.
How can you apply this to future learning?
Anthropology doesn't have much to work on. An important skill that we learned was critically analyzing every shred of evidence that is presented- with so few clues of the past, nothing is overlooked. This class has taught me to use a thorough eye when studying anything new.
