Name of Assignment: Oona Griffin, Short Story
Subject: English 104
Facilitator/Teacher: Professor Jeff Jackson
Description of Work/Assignment: For this project, I had to write a story between 1000-2000 words in a first-person narrative. The only other requirements were for the story to have a setting, characters, conflict, and arc.
Which 21st Century Skill do you feel this assignment addresses, and why?
This project addressed my communication skills more than anything else, because I told a story through written communication and presented it to my professor and class.
What are you most proud of from this assignment, and why?
I am most proud of my narrative. I wrote four drafts of my story and managed to keep the consistent narrative of a male, 30-something year-old pilot named Leo. My professor complemented the narrative in my second draft, so I was extra careful with it on the last two drafts.
How did you develop and/or improve upon your 21st Century Skill with this assignment?
I developed my Interpersonal skills in this assignment because of the feedback I received from my professor and writing class. I also developed the skill by giving my feedback to others.
What was most difficult about completing this task?
The most difficult part of completing was the second draft. The first one had expanded on some good ideas but had holes in the storyline and mediocre writing, so instead of editing some things out and some things in, I completely restarted the second draft. The second draft was difficult as well, because I had to edit out almost 1000 words to make it fit the word count.
How could you improve this work? If you could start over, what would you do differently?
I have a lot of room to improve my work, and if I could expand on my story I would make it longer. One piece of feedback I got was that it was a little rushed, and I agree and think that if I worked at it, I could expand the story to at least 10,000 words.
How does this relate to what you have learned in the past?
This creative writing course relates to my 8th grade English class because it has minimal requirements and gives me a lot of room to be creative. I have not had a writing class with so few restrictions since 8th grade.
How can you apply this to future learning?
I would like to pursue writing in the future, so I can use every aspect of this class to push me forward. I am learning both story elements and finding new ideas to build on.
